A Summer of Awards for Northumberland Cheese
It’s been a remarkable summer for our small Northumbrian dairy. Across two respected agricultural shows, several of our cheeses were recognised for their craft,...
A show-stopping alternative to the traditional cake, our bespoke cheese wedding cakes are built from tiers of cheese handmade in our dairy on Blagdon Estate. Serve yours as a centrepiece, a dessert course, or the heart of your evening spread. Every cake is bespoke: choose your cheeses layer by layer, dress it to match your day. Our Cheese Wedding Cakes must be ordered 4 months in advance and can't be purchased online. They are collection only due to the bespoke nature of the cheeses. All of our Cheese Wedding Cakes are supplied undressed.
Choose your tiers and cheeses with our help.
Pick up your finished cake, ready to dress.
Arrange a wedding consultation with us to decide which cake is right for you and to make your cheese selection (samples included!). N.B. due to holding the consultations in our Cheese Loft Café we can only accommodate 2 people at the consultation. We ask that you order at least four months before your big day. Each cake is made to order from cheeses handcrafted in our dairy, so this lead time lets us prepare everything to perfection.
Our standard designs serve from 60 to 160 guests - see the guide under each design. As a rule of thumb, allow about 70g of cheese per person if the cake is served as a cheese course, or less if it is one of several evening treats.
Our four standard designs are priced from £180 to £395, as shown above. Because every cake is bespoke, the final price depends on the tiers and cheeses you choose - we will confirm it with you at your consultation or over the phone.
No. Because every cake is made to order and collected from the dairy, we take wedding cake orders by phone on 01670 789 798 (option 1), by email to weddings@northumberlandcheese.co.uk or at a consultation. Only the Cheese Wedding Cake Sample Pack can be ordered online.
Collection only, from our dairy on Blagdon Estate, due to the bespoke nature of the cheeses.
Any of our own Northumberland cheeses, made from cows', goats' and sheep's milk - from Original and Nettle to Oak Smoked, Chilli, Redesdale, Elsdon and Chesterwood. Nettle, our bestseller, is the most popular choice for the large tiers, and we can add other cheeses to complement our own, such as soft continental cheeses. We will help you build tiers that look and taste right together.
All of our cheeses are pasteurised, and the seven in our sample pack - Original, Nettle, Oak Smoked, Chilli, Redesdale, Elsdon and Chesterwood - are suitable for vegetarians. Every cake contains milk; other allergens depend on the cheeses you choose, so please tell us about any dietary requirements when you get in touch.
All of our cheese wedding cakes are supplied undressed. Most couples dress the cake on the day with fruit, flowers, foliage or a topper - we are happy to share ideas at your consultation.
Yes. Order a Cheese Wedding Cake Sample Pack to try our cheeses at home, or book a consultation at the dairy, where samples are included.
Consultations are held in our Cheese Loft Café at the dairy and include samples of the cheeses. Because of space we can accommodate two people per consultation - if more people would like a say in the selection, order a sample pack as well. Book by emailing weddings@northumberlandcheese.co.uk or calling 01670 789 798 (option 1).
Keep the cheese refrigerated until the day, then take it out two to three hours before serving so it comes to room temperature. Dress the cake as close to serving as you can and keep it out of direct sunlight.
Yes - many couples serve the cake as the cheese course or dessert, or as the centrepiece of an evening buffet with crackers, chutney and fruit.
We began making farmhouse cheese in the heart of Northumberland in 1984, starting with a single ewe's milk cheese in the Rede Valley. Four decades on, we still craft every award-winning cheese by hand at our dairy on Blagdon Estate.
