2011 Cheese Awards- notes of a humble prize winner!!

Frome Cheese Show 2011

Red carpets, flashing lights, little black dresses and champagne flutes are all images that come to mind when you think about Awards Ceremonies. But no, not in the cheese industry. Let’s try that picture again; chef whites, rows of hand crafted cheeses and proud cheesemakers from all over the UK and abroad. That’s more like it!

We had the privilege of entering a selection of our cheeses into a number of regional to global cheese shows in 2011 and we’re chuffed to say we didn’t come away empty handed! It’s great to get a bit of international recognition for what we do best; making cheese for you guys to enjoy. So here is a bit more detail on which Northumberland cheeses were the show stoppers last year…

The Great Yorkshire Show, July 2011

This show has been going for more than 10 years now and cheese entries have risen from 300 to more than 800 this year- what a lot of competition! That’s      why we were so delighted to walk away with a Gold Award for our Northumberland Oak Smoked Cheese. It was an honour to be top of the Smoked Cheese class.

The Mid-Somerset Show, August 2011

The next prize we snatched up was for Chevington

Frome Cheese Show, August 2011

Frome was a particularly proud and joyous show for us as Blagdon Blue was presented with his first ever award (and shiny silver rosette!). Having only been making this creamy blue since 2010 it was the confirmation we needed that we were on to a winning recipe here.

World Cheese Award, November 2011

It was a great end to our year when the certificate came through the post to let us know Brinkburn (our serial winner) had worked her magic on another discerning panel of cheese judges and been awarded Gold at the World Cheese Awards. This is the largest show on our calendar each year with 2,500 entries from 34 countries, judged by over 200 expert buyers from every corner of the globe. It takes an entire day to judge!

We hope this has given you a little insight in to the world of British and International Cheese Awards and the tasting and grading of our best cheeses. Shows are often open to the public so we will let you know if theres a show coming near you!
